As this unprecedented and challenging year slowly nears its end, it's very evident most of us are ready for a well-deserved break.

A recent survey by Peakon found that over one in three Aussies (33 per cent) are on the brink of burnout with productivity also dipping earlier than usual. The results showed that nearly one in five Aussies (18 per cent) said their productivity levels have dipped earlier this year, blaming the apathy lull on the pandemic.

'The trend is concerning but it's probably not surprising that a third of employees are at the brink of burnout,' said Peakon's APAC Director Luke Amundson.

'2020 has been a real test of agility for most employees and businesses and you look at the biggest changes in the employee's life and that's the blurring of the work and home line.

'What I see in the Peakon data set is that most people have been enduring 2020. They've endured the challenges with their team, the changes in their business but they did not grow, they didn't prosper.'

The study also revealed more women than men were feeling the brunt of burnout. Out of a pool of 2000 respondents, 38 per cent of women surveyed said they were on the brink of burnout in comparison to the 29 per cent of men surveyed.

People who are more empathetic may also be more susceptible to burnout, said Mr Amundso.

'If more people around you are burnt out, or stressed and anxious, then that's also going to impact you,' he said.

WHAT IS BURNOUT?

Previously speaking to news.com.au on burnout, Sydney psychologist Martha Tsakalos defined burnout as 'a state of physical, mental and emotional exhaustion caused by excessive and prolonged stress'.

Although the conditions are wide-ranging, sufferers of burnout can experience symptoms that fall into three main categories. They are: Physical and mental exhaustion, cynicism and detachment and a lack of accomplishment or achievement.

Looking at how this manifests in the workforce, Mr Amundson said it can feel like you 'don't have enough time, energy, effort or passion' left to do your job.

'If you look around at your colleagues, one in every three of them are basically saying: ‘I can't take this anymore, I don't have enough in me',' he said.

Still Hard At Work

When it comes to how COVID has impacted our mental health, research from SEEK revealed that 56 per cent of Australians are more aware of mental health due to COVID-19 while 45 per cent of Aussies agreed that the pandemic has impacted their mental health.

If you're struggling to make it through your last days of work, or are working through the Christmas and New Year period, Mr Amundson said setting realistic and achievable goals and prioritising your workload will be crucial.

'In the lead up to the festive season and early next year, prioritise what you can actually do and set yourself goals you can actually hit,' he said.

'Burnout is associated with not having enough energy or bandwidth so if you don't have enough in your tank to hit your goals, you need to realign them.'

Organisations can also help support their employees by helping to foster 'meaningful connections' at work. Instead of communicating via Zoom, phone calls and social media, Mr Amundson called for small but intentional interactions to be prioritised by businesses.

'In this new way of working, connecting with others in a meaningful way is really, really important,' he said.

'The empathy that can result in those coffees or random conversations go a long way in eradicating the perceived burnout.'

While technology has meant that we've been able to work remotely during the pandemic, it's important to be aware of its drawbacks, said Mr Amundson. Picture: iStock.Source:istock

However, if you've reached the end of 2020 and want to head into the new year with a glass half-full mentality, SEEK's resident psychologist Sabina Read said this year has (for better or worse) given us the opportunity to grow by challenging ourselves.

'I don't like to sugar coat, but I think there has been an opportunity to reflect on what has worked,' she said. 'What did we learn? What will we do differently? How did we help others? How would I like to reflect on this period in order to change direction?

'If we dig deep and reflect on those kinds of questions, I believe we could all come up with some answers that don't equate with hopelessness but rather possibility and growth.'
